Uzu

I have been influenced by music for the shô, a Japanese Gagaku instrument. The shô player produces sound by both inhaling and exhaling slowly: the sound is produced in time as if drawing a series of circles with a slight difference each time, resulting in a spiral structure. This forms one of the fundamental elements of my music. In Uzu, the placing of the orchestral instruments both on stage and around the audience creates a swirl of sound in which the audience is enveloped by soundwaves, just like in shô music. Ultimately, the swirl of sound leads the audience into the world of light. Toshio Hosokawa
