‘Das große Lächeln’ is the name given to a monumental statue by Antje Tesche-Mentzen. Is it a female that confronts the observer omnisciently, or is it a male figure? I am intrigued by enigmas and attempt to solve them by setting them to music, adding further enigmas in the process. Music should also always reflect the environment in which it is created: every morning, I listen to war reports from around the world which make it virtually impossible to smile. For this reason, the strings and percussion attempt to drown out the smiling melody played on the treble zither until it emerges towards the end like a phoenix from the ashes, shining brilliantly.
