Description

Before Anthony Burgess the novelist, there was Anthony Burgess the composer. It was this latter version of the Mancunian that Raymond Yiu first encountered via his This Man and Music, in which he talked about his own compositions. With this unique pathway into the world of Burgess and the resonance of autodidacticism, Yiu investigated and made use of Burgess’ musical materials and thoughts on music into shaping this cycle of six songs for baritone and orchestra. The texts are poems, or fragments of them, by Burgess circling around the three subjects that were close to the writer’s heart - words, music and the conflict between good and evil were the three subjects close to the writer’s heart.
