Description
The Riverrun is the second of a set of three works Humphrey Searle wrote for speaker and orchestra, along with Gold Coast Customs (1949) and The Shadow of Cain (1951). The piece is a setting of Anna Livia’s monologue from the end of Finnegan’s Wake by James Joyce, and takes its title from the first word of the novel, ‘riverrun’. Searle wished the speaker to be an Irish woman if possible, as Anna Livia is a personification of the river Liffey that runs through the centre of Dublin, and the text follows her thoughts as she flows to the sea.
