Shadowplay

Cast in two movements, this is an abstract work which sees instruments from the orchestra ‘shadowing’ the solo cello and shows some of the composers’ strongest musical influences, including Tippett and Stravinsky. Joe Duddell creates a sense of momentum throughout the first movement from multiple cross rhythms. The second movement opens with a slow, reflective passage of sparse, simple homophonic chords which gradually become absorbed as cross rhythms return and the texture thickens.
