Sen úzkosti

The Dream of Anxiety was written in 1994 and is dedicated to the memory of my classmate from the studies Pavel Dobeš, who died unexpectedly and prematurely. This fact is reflected in the atmosphere of the composition, its tragicness, its hopelessness, which corresponds to the biblical motto “… you do not know the day, nor the hours”. In terms of form, the Dream of Anxiety stands on the border between a symphonic poem and a one-movement concert for a solo flute and a symphony orchestra. 

At the beginning of the composition, the solo flute exhibits "melos" - a thematic material of tonal melodic fragments, from which the exhibition consists of three themes. The performance consists of an ostinato of an orchestral piano, framed by an evolutionary central part - a mourning chorus of French horns with string instruments in dialogue with the contrasting bands of trumpets and flutes. Part of composition opens into the cadence of a solo instrument. The performance brings again three themes of the exposition, but this time they are compositionally "cut" and these "fragments" are mixed together. Catharsis then unexpectedly comes in the form of a long, quarter-tone labile tone of a solo flute, a metaphor-symbol of something that was forcibly interrupted, something unfulfilled...
