Description
Alexander Glazunov achieved consummate success in the golden age of Russian ballet with his composition Raymonda. A completely new role for music on the stage was anticipated, and expectations were not disappointed. Raymonda contains not only folkloristic dance styles, but also elements of the new music of its time. Among other influences, reminiscences of Wagner, Offenbach and Satie can be heard in the tale of young Raymonda. The story begins during Raymonda’s birthday celebrations where the young woman is intensely courted, receiving sumptuous presents from Abderrachman, the chieftain of the Saracens. Raymonda’s fiancé, Jean de Brienne, presents only a wall tapestry bearing his image as his gift to her, but suddenly, the young man emerges from the tapestry to dance with her in the garden. During the evening festivities, Abderrachman attempts to abduct and seduce Raymonda, but de Brienne confronts Abderrachman and ultimately overpowers his opponent. Finally there are no further obstacles to his marriage with Raymonda.
