Pipa Pattern for string orchestra and woodwind demonstrates the composer's preoccupation with a special performance technique expressing a single simple rhythm from start to finish. The work echoes the Jiyue images from Dunhuang, China – in particular those found in the Mogao Caves. It could also be said that these images represent the concept of Pipa Pattern, revealing the composer’s deep connection to Chinese culture.
