For those who are familiar only with Pärt's music of the last 30 years, the uncompromisingly radical nature of this score will no doubt come as a surprise. "Obituary" is the first piece of Estonian dodecaphonic music, and also the young Pärt's first work for large orchestra. The performance of the piece drew harsh criticism from the Soviet press.
