Description
Alexander Goehr’s music theatre Triptych, of which Naboth’s Vineyard forms the first part, established the genre of music theatre in the UK.
Goehr describes his approach: 'The original Bible text has been adapted to form a kind of montage version of this story about the disposal of property. The story is told by means of choric narration (contralto, tenor and bass soloists acting as a miniature chorus), and direct speech: arias, recitatives, etc. for soloists singing the parts of Achab, Naboth, Jezabel, the Elders and the prophet Elijah, set in Latin and mimed sections which do not reduplicate the plot as already presented, but link a different idiom to create my personal interpretation of the story.'
