Music for String Orchestra

The doleful yet dance-like theme which opens this work captures a duality which pervades the work. The second movement's motoric imitation is broken only momentarily by a poignant pastorale which hints at the piety of the Adagio religioso to follow. A vivacious Allegro, full of syncopation-play and rhythmic puns, tips the scales of the work towards illumination and optimism.
