What was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart really like? A man whose genius can only be described as otherworldly, who displayed a highly contradictory nature and an acute degree of inner conflict, and was associated with dark, intractable enigmas? Enjott Schneider was fixated by this mystery when he encountered Mozart’s unfinished Oboe Concerto K 293.

In his own work Mozart Ascending, he explores his ‘musical thoughts’ about the child prodigy who was at turns jubilant or in deep despair, and seemed irrevocably entangled in the web of fate spun by his ever-dominating father Leopold. ‘I feel that this fatefulness is present as the subtext and ambiguous foundation of all his works. Mozart Ascending is an attempt to transform this kind of subtext behind a composition into an emotional experience.’ (Enjott Schneider)
