Description
My dramatic fragment for orchestra, Moscow – Petushki, was commissioned by the Verbier Festival.
The cult novel by Russian author Venedikt Yerofeyev, published during the Perestroika period, provided the work with its title. My score is, however, in no way a mere illustration of the book. Yerofeyev’s travel poem focuses on an alcoholic who is travelling in a suburban train from Moscow to Petushki to visit his mistress and their small son but never arrives, as he is murdered by his boozing companions en route.
The festival organisers have placed my work alongside Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2. With this in mind, I have used identical orchestration to Beethoven. Rodion Shchedrin
