Description

Maharal Dreaming is an orchestral fantasy based on musical ideas from my opera Golem, but also including new material. Hence, the work could be heard as an introduction to the opera but is entirely separate from it. The Maharal, a Rabbi, creates a huge man from clay, the golem, through the power of the Kabbalah. He is intended to protect the innocent and root out evil, but the golem turns on the community. In writing the piece, I had in mind some of the dreams the Maharal might have had before he took the momentous step to create the man of clay. John Casken
