Description

Arnold Trowell was born in Wellington, New Zealand on 25.6.1887; he died in Hawkhurst, England on 25.11.1966. In his day he was highly esteemed as a cellist, teacher and composer. His first cello teacher was his father. Belgian cellist Jean Gérardy, who stayed in Wellington for a short time on a concert tour, gave the talented Arnold a few cello lessons. At the age of 16 Trowell moved to Frankfurt, where he took lessons with Hugo Becker. He went on to take lessons with Edouard Jacobs in Brussels, finishing his studies with outstanding results at the age of seventeen. After moving to London in 1906 he embarked on a solo career: for almost forty years he performed in concerts in Britain to great acclaim, earning special praise for his lovely tone and brilliant technique. At the end of the 1920s Trowell took on a post at the Guildhall School of Music, where he became a highly respected teacher. His compositions include many Morceaux, simple pieces for tuition purposes and variously demanding salon pieces or encores. Trowell wrote more demanding virtuoso cello pieces for his own use, including four cello concertos, sonatas for cello and piano and solo suites. He also composed various chamber works and orchestral pieces. Le Rappel des Oiseaux op. 3/2 was published by Schott in London in 1922 as plate no. S & Co. 3980.
