Description
My Konzertstück for piano and small orchestra was written in Boston, Massachusetts in December 1968. It was commissioned for Daniel Barenboim and the English Chamber Orchestra by the Brighton Festival Society. It is dedicated to Daniel Barenboim.
The composition is one continuous movement. It consists of a number of sections each followed by a development of itself. A subtitle for the piece might be “Changing Lines” in the way this term is used in the I Ching (Book of Changes). Each section is characterised by its own rhythmic structure and thematic material: in each development, one element of the rhythmic structure is changed and this leads to thematic and textural variation and ultimately a transformation of the original.
The orchestra consists of piccolo (doubling flute), 2 oboes, 2 bassoons, 2 horns and strings.
