Ten years ago, Daniel Barenboim opened the Musikkindergarten in Berlin. His aim was not musical education per se, but the education of children with and through music. Every year, one large-scale project serves as an illustration of how music can penetrate other areas of education. To mark the tenth anniversary of the school, Daniel Kehlmann wrote a small libretto for which the Musikkindergarten asked Dieter Schnebel to compose a musical setting. Described by Schnebel as his ‘Öperchen’ [little opera], the text and music examine the question of what music actually is. The cast, comprising children aged between two and six years, search for the answer accompanied by musicians from the Staatskapelle Berlin under the direction of Daniel Barenboim. Linda Reisch
