IV. Symphonie "Concertante"

During my time as Composer-in-residence with the Niederrheinische Sinfoniker in the season 2010/2011, I received a commission for a large-scale symphonic work from the orchestra’s musical director, Graham Jackson. I decided to compose a symphony with a classical character picking up on the concept of the ’sinfonia concertante’.
A solo ensemble consisting of different instruments in each movement enters into a contest with the orchestral tutti: in the first movement, the soloists are four woodwind instruments; in the second movement, five solo strings and harp; percussion and piano are the soloists in the third movement; three brass instruments in the fourth movement and finally a series of alternating solo ensembles in the concluding fifth movement.
