Like hardly any other German composer of the 20th century, Werner Richard Heymann created a wide range of music, from art songs, cabaret chansons, film hits, a string quartet to orchestral music: symphonic music, silent film scores, American film scores, operettas, incidental music and musical comedies . Twice Heymann played a key role in the emergence of new genres, with the literary cabaret chanson after the end of the First World War and the sound film operetta at the beginning of the 1930s. When he had to flee from the National Socialists in 1933, he was the most-performed German composer with his hit films like A Friend, a Good Friend or That's Only Once.
With its 40 titles, this songbook offers an excellent cross-section of Heymann's vocal works; including previously unpublished pieces that were thought to be long lost, such as Kellerleute or Shop Around The Corner.
