When I first saw Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper in 2006, I could immediately visualise an instrumentation: a cello surrounded by 12 violins positioned in two groups either side of the cello. I only discovered the formal musical concept for the work shortly before its composition in 2023: a set of variations on a chorale for Holy Communion by Luther. The theme appears at the centre of the work as a symbol of Jesus Christ. The six preceding variations move progressively closer to the chorale and the six subsequent variations become steadily more distanced from the theme. The composition is architecturally framed by an introduction and a coda.
