Wilfried Hiller utilises the Bible story of Job for his monodrama. A Reader commences the work with the four ‘messages for Job’, creates a transition with Job’s afflictions and concludes with the death of Job. The work scored for only one singer features Job’s dialogue with his invisible interlocutur God. The composer specifies an older tenor voice for the title role ‘as the vocal chords are tensed to their extremes due to the high registers of the vocal part, permitting an intensely vivid depiction of the helplessness of a human being in the face of divine supremity.’ (Wilfried Hiller) Hiller’s equally small-scaled music theatre work An diesem heutigen Tage focused on the historical figure of Maria Stuart was conceived for a single female. These two stage works make an ideal combination within the framework of a fulllength performance on the strength of their superficial parallels – both featuring an actress – and their brevity.
