Description
My Geistervariationen were composed in response to a commission from the Neue Lausitzer Philharmonie [Görlitz, Germany] for a concert in the series ‘Neue Lausitzer Landpartie’ [literal translation: New Lusatian country outing] which is dedicated to the theme of the mountain spirit Rübezahl. The work consists of a breathless set of very brief variations, a crazy collection of snapshots, most of which are shorter than 20 seconds. During composition, I almost turned into a musical Rübezahl myself as the music became ever more unpredictable, transforming itself unceasingly. As so often in my work, a wide variety of spirits from the past and present haunt the music. Anno Schreier
