Description

Lili Boulanger’s scenic cantata is based on Eugène Adenis’s poem and freely adapts an episode from Goethe’s Faust II, focusing the action on Mephisto, Faust, and Helena. It deals with the moment when Faust asks to see the beautiful Helen of Troy – at the price of surrendering his soul to Mephisto and thus being eternally damned. The central concern of my transcription was to accommodate the musical-theatrical structure of the piece in the sense of a concentrated and textually com prehensible form of dialogue, making it more suitable for the realization of an opera scene.
