Description
Eve dreams in Paradise was composed for the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and its then principal conductor, Simon Rattle. The work sets a passage from John Milton’s Paradise Lost, in which Eve describes to Adam a dream she has had: She was persuaded by Satan to eat from the forbidden tree of knowledge, then flew with him up to the clouds and beheld earth from above. Adam is disturbed by the dream, but reassures Eve. The passage is set in a wide-ranging ‘arioso’ with a transparent orchestral accompaniment suggestive of the precariousness of paradise and the elusiveness of Eve’s Dream.
