Description

From the middle of the 1980s onwards, Mikis Theodorakis turned his hand to opera, composing five ‘lyrical tragedies’ based on Ancient Greek myths. His musical objective was the blending of Greek folk-like melodies with the European symphonic style. He was particularly attracted to the timeless, depth-psychological dimensions of the ancient myths: “I have the impression that I am progressing to the source of human nature with the characters of Clytamnestra and Electra, descending deep into the human soul and attempting to express its entire depths (and shallows).” (Mikis Theodorakis)
