Following a majestic introduction from the wind section, Krzysztof Penderecki includes a quotation from Bach’s final chorale from the Cantata Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott, BWV 80 [A Mighty Fortress is our God]. Here the composer omits the woodwind to give more prominence to the radiant, festive tone of the brass in combination with percussion and strings. This work was composed to celebrate the 1200th anniversary of the Polish town of Cieszyn (Teschen) near Katowice.
