Jörg Widmann describes Dunkle Saiten as an explicit homage to Robert Schumann and he especially refers to Schumann’s Cello Concerto with its central tonality A minor: ’At central points in this one movement piece, A minor blazes up for some seconds: when the cello appears for the first time; when the dark string texture tantalisingly forces up as a scream in flute, clarinet and trumpet; after the central descent into hell the piano key is pressed silently; and in the winds as the initial accord of the final choral.’
