Can this insolent girl who just walked through the door really be a princess? A pea under her mattress should reveal the truth. Ernst Toch and his librettist Benno Elkan lampoon the concept of pureblooded aristocracy in their tale. The music in the style of ‘New Objectivity’ is precise and satirical, maintaining a distance to any form of operatic sentimentality. The princess interrupts her romantic lullaby aria with distinctly unromantic spoken rants about her uncomfortable bed. The servants rushing to her side sing an old-fashioned fugue, and at the end the Queen Mother belts out a triumphal fanfare: anyone so sensitive and fastidious simply must be a princess!
