Description
The theme of my Symphony No. 6 Der Rhein is the great river which has been shrouded in legend since Roman times. The first movement Der Rheinfall (The Rhine Falls) begins forcefully and sets archaic texts by Plutarch and Martialis, culminating in the evocation 'Pater Rhenus', the Gaulish God of the Rhein. The second movement sketches three tonal images within a rondo structure: the romantic life of a castle, the exuberance of wine and drinking, and finally the hushed world of the convent (Hildegard von Bingen). In the third movement – Lorelei the central figure of Rhein folklore – sings a fantasy with text by Romantic poet Rosa Maria Assing. The finale portrays with orchestral virtuosity the dimension and power of the myths surrounding the river Rhine. Enjott Schneider
