Description
Maxwell Davies subtitled this work Reflections on the life and work of
Paula Modersohn-Becker, a German painter who pioneered early expressionism. In her short life, Modersohn-Becker, who grew up in Bremen, produced a considerable number of paintings which were heavily influenced by her visits to
Paris where she encountered works by Cézanne and Gauguin. This piece is one of a series of works being commissioned in the run up to Bremen’s tenure as European City of Culture in 2010.
