Ein kleines buntes Stofftier muss auf der Suche nach seiner Identität feststellen, dass es zwar vielen Tieren ähnelt, aber keinem wirklich gleicht. Zuerst ist es traurig, erkennt aber am Ende, dass es gar nicht anderen gleichen muss, um sich am Leben zu freuen, denn nur eines ist wichtig: Ich bin ich.

Elisabeth Naske received a commission from the Jeunesse Österreich to set the classic children’s book Das kleine Ich bin ich (The little ‘I am what I am’) by Mira Lobe and Susi Weigl to music. Scored for small ensemble with a length of just over half an hour, it addresses children’s search for an identity: I am what I am and that is a good thing!
A small multicoloured soft toy realises that although it looks similar to a number of animals, it is not identical to any of them. It is initially sad, but ultimately recognises that it does not have to be like others to enjoy life, as only one thing is important: I am I.
