Love in its unfathomable variations and also in its pure and unadulterated form is the underlying theme and motor of the sombre plot of Hans Pfitzner’s opera Das Herz which also includes an evocation of the spirits and a pact with the devil. Two sections from the second and third acts form the lynchpins of the plot: during court festivities, the entanglement of the two chief protagonists in black magic is discovered, but they are subsequently redeemed by their love for one another in the culminating apotheosis of love.
