danses imaginaires II

This work was commissioned by the Mozarteum Orchestra of Salzburg for its ’2 orchestras’ project. My ’imaginary dance’ is influenced by the slow and gentle dance movements in Japanese ancient dance. I have thought of my music as calligraphy of sound on the canvas of time and space, with the solo performers of each instrument playing a kind of sound calligraphy. One note lengthens and shapes the melody by means of the continuing change. danses imaginaires could also be taken as a dance of calligraphy. (Toshio Hosokawa)
