Creß ertrinkt has remained a topical yet classic work in the school theatre repertoire since it was written, depicting the conflicts within a group of young people that culminates in tragedy. The work adheres to the tradition of Brechtian didactic drama and is characterised by its strict form divided into ‘processes’ rather than acts, the epic treatment of the chorus as a commentator, and the depiction of events from a distance. The role of the leader Holtok should be undertaken by a musically trained young adult; the orchestral parts require experience in ensemble playing.
