‘This is an urban work which could not have been composed in a rural location’, Berlinbased composer Christian Jost comments on his work which was commissioned by the Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart of the SWR. His concerto reflects the incessant fl ow of tension and relaxation, hustle and bustle and peace and quiet and artifi ciality and nature: characteristics of urban life.

Description
Normally, I compose with a clear idea of sound and form. That was not true in the case of this piece. The idea of the immediate opening, in which the solo voice emerges in unison with the first violins, was my only requirement. Thus arose a single-movement organic structure which is characterised by insistent rhythmic cells and has only a single tempo indication: = 76 crotchets per minute, espressivo. I completed the composition at about the time when the COVID-19 lockdown ended, and since this had resulted in a dark-coloured work in mood and sound, the title Concerto noir seemed perfect to me.
