The accordion has fascinated me for a long time - the people’s organ, a staple in a variety of European and world folk music... a black mechanical box, with a breathing center. This idea became the main inspiration for an early student work of mine entitled The Accordion, but scored for an ensemble not featuring the instrument at all. ‘A machine with a soul’ was my working title then, and it was this line which inspired the new concerto, at a crucial time for our humanity. Just as our society is grappling with the concept of technology dictating our cultural nourishment, algorithms and AI trying to replace real connection and curiosity, while our souls long for affection and understanding.
