Description
The word ‘hockett’ comes from the Latin ‘hoquetus’, a medieval method of composition whereby two lines alternate with each other between moments of movement and calm. The melody is split up into short phrases, which the two lines pass to each other in quick succession. Goehr refers to Schumann’s Konzertstück für vier Ventilhörner und Orchester F-Dur (Concert Piece for 4 valve horns and orchestra F major) Op. 86, by masterfully weaving alternating contrapuntal lines into the passages of the four horns.
