An American in London

An American in London was created in 1991 for the debut recording of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, under the baton of John Mauceri. The work is based on vocal refrains, dance numbers, and underscored sequences from the 1937 film, A Damsel in Distress, for which George and Ira Gershwin wrote the music and lyrics. While Robert Russell Bennett and George Parrish were the orchestrators for the film, the original orchestral materials were completed by Steven D. Bowen and Russell Warner and edited by John Mauceri and Tommy Krasker for the recording, which took place during July 1991 in Culver City, California. An American in London was released on the Philips CD ’Gershwins in Hollywood’ in 1991.
