Description

The trio Ali Khan dares to experiment in a very special way: it presents Pakistani Qawwali, the spiritual music of Sufi music, in a modern dancefloor guise. The band was rewarded with a WAMMIE nomination for this daring venture.
Sukhewat Ali Khan and his sister Riffet Salemet were born singing Qawwli. No wonder, as they can look back on a long line of ancestors of this artistic and ecstatic vocal music.
Ali Khan, completed by guitarist and producer Richard Michos to form a trio and strengthened by numerous guests such as didgeridoo master Stephen Kent on the longplayer „Teswir“, is one of only two bands of the genre in the world in which brother and sister sing side by side. But it is not only this fact that makes this debut album stand out from the mass of new releases.
Ali Khan underlay the Qawwali with dance grooves and a rocking guitar sound, but in doing so they want to commit anything but sacrilege. The word respect crops up again and again in interviews with the band. And this form of composition, founded five hundred years ago by Amir Khusrau, a composer of Turkish descent who is said to have brought the sitar and tabla to India, commands respect.
