A la sonnerie

The duet waltzes play with the sound of bell ringing (La Sonnerie) in various ways. The flute duet is a particularly enjoyable form of shared music-making, because what we find here is a structure of intense tonal proximity. This wind instrument’s flexibility of intonation presents both musicians with the considerable challenge of listening and constantly re-attuning themselves to each other. The harmony of the instruments produces the situation of a musical dialogue in which the players can pick up and continue each other’s thoughts, confirming them, contradicting them and at times taking a completely different view.
