Description

Pēteris Vasks’ Lonely Angel was composed almost a decade after his first violin concerto Distant Light and was also premiered by Gidon Kremer. Vasks was inspired by a vision he experienced of an angel which he describes as follows: ‘The angel hovers over the world observing the state of the ravaged Earth with tears in his eyes, and yet an almost imperceptible, loving touch of his wings brings comfort and healing. This piece is a response to the pain.’ The composer treats the solo instrument as a human or more precisely super-human voice, a tonal representation of the lonely angel who hopefully watches untiringly over the world.
