Description

Enjott Schneider’s Second Symphony Sisyphos, written in 2000, is a symphonic concerto for percussion and orchestra based on Albert Camus’ philosophical essay on Sisyphos as the cipher of the absurd. The first movement “Punished by Gods” is a perpetuum mobile concerned with the nature of senseless activity. The second movement “Visions” depicts illusion and dreams as false ideology; the third, “The Liberation of Sisyphos”, is free of utopias and lives irrevocably in the powerful “here and now”: here the otherwise complex instrumentation is reduced to bass drums. Camus concludes his essay by stating ’Fate is not a punishment. The struggle itself is enough to fill a man’s heart. We must imagine Sisyphos happy.’ Enjott Schneider
