Description
The title of this work is taken from E. E. Cummings’s experimental and uniquely spelled poem n(o)w. As the composer himself stated, ‘There is no deep connection between the content of the poem and the music’, rather this work depicts a tranquil and dreamy world of rain. Commissioned by the London Sinfonietta in 1982, this piece, along with other works like Rain Tree (1981) and Rain Spell (1982), is part of a series of ‘rain’ related works that the composer wrote as ‘waterscapes’. Its striking final section is filled with what Takemitsu calls a ‘sea of tonality’, and features a multi-tonal sound.
