Description
Toru Takemitsu himself describes Quotation of Dream as 'schizo-eclectic'. The personality of the work is characterized by both its own consciousness and by that of other people. To that end, Takemitsu quotes works by other great artists in his impressionistic double concerto.
The subtitle Say sea, take me! was taken from a poem by Emily Dickinson which, according to Takemitsu's own words, reflects his own longing for the sea and indeed uses musical motifs from Debussy’s symphonic poem La Mer. The elegiac rapt work was written for Paul Crossley and Peter Serkin and has been performed by all major piano duos.
