Pneuma ist das jüngste Werk einer Serie erfolgreicher Gemeinschaftsarbeiten von Gavin Bryars und Carolyn Carlson. Sieben Ausschnitte aus Air and Dreams, einer Schrift des französischen Philosophen Gaston Bachelard, geben der Komposition ihre siebenteilige Struktur. Der Verzicht auf Geigen und hohe Holzbläser schafft einen reichen, dunkel-sonoren Klang, der zusammen mit für Philip Jeck geschriebenen Klang-Improvisationen mittels eines Schallplattendesks das für Bryars charakteristische Klangspektrum erzeugt.
