About Unsuk Chin

Unsuk Chin, born 1961 in Seoul. Studied composition there (1981–85) and in Hamburg with György Ligeti (1985–88). Compositions performed by numerous ensembles, including the Berliner Philharmoniker, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Los Angeles Philharmonic. Composer in residence at the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Philharmonie Essen and elsewhere. Honors include the Grawemeyer Award (2004), Arnold Schönberg Prize (2005), Heidelberger Künstlerinnenpreis (2007), Prince Pierre of Monaco Musical Composition Prize (2010) and Korean Ho-Am Prize (2012). Founder and director of the Seoul Philharmonic’s “Ars Nova” series since 2006, and artistic director of the Philharmonia Orchestra’s “Music of Today” series since 2011.
