Description

Her Oboe Concerto occupied Ursula Mamlok repeatedly over a period of several decades. The first version with orchestra was written between 1974 and 1976, but was not premiered in Göttingen until in 2013. In 1980 the composer wrote the second version for oboe, two pianos and percussion which is now available here as sales edition. This version was premiered at the New York Manhattan School of Music in 1982, where Ursula Mamlok worked as a teacher for a long time, with the oboist Henry Schuman as performing soloist. Eventually, Mamlok composed the third version with chamber orchestra accompaniment in 2003.
The three movements which are played without a break still give an idea of the structure of the classical solo concerto, while the oboe stands out with several solo cadenzas. The tonal language, however, is markedly modern, with a frequent use of multiphonics as well as dramatic noise-like percussion.
