There can hardly be a classic story related in music with greater verve: Nino Rota’s orchestral sound sparkles with wit and good humour. In his version of the ‘imaginary invalid’, Molière suddenly makes an appearance as an actor and enjoys great success at the royal court. He is however soon surpassed in the king’s favour by the composer Lully and is subsumed into his own characters in a state of delirium.
