Largo
for violoncello and orchestra
Largo reflects Krzysztof Penderecki’s affection for the cello, which he once described as his favourite instrument. He sets up the lone soloist with a group of four additional cellos: the resulting tonal blocks form a dialogue which is repeatedly interrupted by the orchestra. Largo was written for the legendary cellist Mstislav Rostropovich who gave the World Première with Seiji Ozawa and the Vienna Philharmonic. As a memorial to one of the greatest soloists of the instrument, Largo has now found a permanent place in contemporary cello repertoire.
