Description
The symphonic poem allows the melody of this symbolic Reformation hymn to develop out of a dark, magical texture, interweaving it with counterthemes and evoking an aura of the fighting spirit with which the hymn is associated. At the climax of the work, however, the pastoral epilogue with its innocent chirping of birdsong and murmurings of nature formulates a clear statement: God’s creation, which we are progressively destroying, is the true location of deep faith and epiphany.
